God Made Rest Holy

In the beginning rest was holy.

In the beginning, rest was set apart.

In the beginning, rest was blessed.

God rested first. Then later His Son gave us a real-world example of how to balance a busy work schedule and rest. Our work and our rest both matter to God, but He made only one holy.

Choosing the Holiness of Rest

Yes. The Lord commands us to keep the Sabbath, but He doesn’t force us to experience the holiness of rest. We must choose for ourselves to experience it. We can elect to go through the outward motions of rest without choosing to seek the shelter of His embrace for rest. Or we can decide to humble ourselves, cultivate a quiet heart and seek the holy ground found when we approach Him and receive His blessing of rest.

David put it this way in Psalm 131:2,3 NLT: “But I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—now and always.”

Notice that David wrote, “I have calmed and quieted myself,” not “The Lord calmed and quieted me.” David chose to still himself, to trust the Lord. A weaned child is content to seek a mother’s arms simply to be held, to be comforted, to be rocked to sleep, to rest in confidence that all is well. We can experience the holiness of His rest when we choose to seek the same with our Father.
