The storm didn't wake Jesus. The cries of His disciples did.
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? - Mark 4:37-40
Jesus rested. But culture teaches us to focus on the storm.
Jesus rested. But culture teaches us to worry about things out of our control.
Jesus rested. But culture teaches us that we need to figure things out on our own.
Jesus woke up. God teaches us that He hears the cries of His children and He responds.
Jesus woke up. God teaches us to focus on the One in control.
Jesus woke up. God teaches us that the only thing we need to figure out is where to place our faith.
The wind didn’t wake Jesus up. The waves didn’t wake Jesus up. The violent rocking of the boat didn’t wake Jesus up. He woke up when He heard the cries of His disciples.
God is still responding to the cries of His children. Practice focusing on Him during the storm. Practice putting your faith in Him and trusting that He is in control. Practice crying out to Him for help. I specifically say PRACTICE because we won’t get it right all of the time. Sometimes we will focus on the storm. Sometimes we will stress and worry over things out of our control. Sometimes we will try and solve problems on our own. Just keep practicing. Keep practicing the ways of Jesus. Over time you will find yourself placing your faith in Him more and more often.
