Amplifying Rest
How do we amplify rest in our lives when we live in a culture transfixed with amplifying unrest? How do we turn off our anxious thoughts and fears? It’s simple but not easy.
Look to God. Always. In every situation. Start with Him. Rest with and in Him.
And exhale. Let’s stop holding our breath in anticipation for what might happen next. Rest in the truth that He is in control so we don’t have to be. Let me say that again: HE’S GOT THIS (whatever THIS is for you right now) REST EASY.
When Words Aren’t Enough
If words aren’t enough to help you breathe easier, try this modification of the 4,7,8 breathing technique:
Breathe in for 4 counts.
Hold your breath for 7 counts.
Breathe out for 8. While breathing out, pray: I trust You, Lord. You are in control.
Repeat. You’ve got to breathe anyway, right? So, why not try this for a few breaths and see how it can reduce your anxiety and amplify rest.
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. - Psalm 150:6
An important note: In the US, nearly 20 percent of adults experience anxiety disorders and nearly 1 in 3 teenagers will experience one. Focused breathing, such as the one mentioned above can help people with an anxiety disorder but is not a substitute for counseling. If you need to speak with a counselor, please find one in your local area. Many are offering virtual and in-person sessions. I know an amazing one licensed to practice in Georgia.
